Support for Youth Organisations in Ukraine

Co-ordinator: Joanna Konieczna
Deadline for completion: mid-September, 2003
Grant provided by: The National Endowment for Democracy

The project, part of a broader programme supporting youth organizations in Belarus and Ukraine, is financed by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, and directed by Paweł Kazanecki. Partners coordinating the activity in Ukraine are Tovarystvo Leva (Lvov) and Spilka Ukrainskoi Molodi (Kiev). The programme started with a competition for large grants for youth organisations from Sumy, Cherkasy, Vinnytsya, Ternopil and Poltava districts (organisations from the Khmelnytsky District will also be applying). One co-ordinating organisation has been selected from each of the five districts. Its task will be to involve local organisations in joint preparation of programmes for the development of local youth initiatives. Eighteen organisations are currently participating in the project; their activities include: formulating strategies for the mobilisation of young people, establishing creative youth clubs, and tourist initiatives. The next stage of the plan will be the selection and implementation of the best submitted projects. The project will end in mid-September, 2003.

Support for Youth Organisations in Belarus

Co-ordinator: Joanna Rohozińska
Time-frame: January 2003 – July 2004
Grant provided by: The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation

The project, part of a broader programme for the support of youth organisations in Belarus and Ukraine, is financed by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and directed by Paweł Kazanecki. Partners co-ordinating the activity in Belarus are Mizhnarodnyi Kantakt (Minsk), the Assembly of Democratic NGO’s in Belarus (Asambleya), the Belarusian Association of Resource Centres (BARC). We have so far organised a study visit to Poland during which young Belarusian NGO leaders got acquainted with Warsaw NGO’s (The Volunteer Centre, The Open Door Association), student organisations (NZS), and met young politicians (Young Democrats, The Republican League, anarchists). They also attended three-day traineeships at Lublin organisations (The SOS Youth Home, the Zawisza Catholic Scout Association, The Life-Long Learning Centre in Kijany, an agro-tourist farm in Witaniów, The European Meeting House in Nasutów, The Nowy Staw Foundation, and the Błonie Estate Centre in Lublin. The St. Maksymilian Kolbe House of Reconciliation and Meetings, and TRATWA and New Village Associations were the host organisations in Gdansk and Olsztyn respectively. Belarusian organisations worked out their own projects for strengthening the third sector in their districts. Seminars held in Belarus provided comprehensive information about the third sector, and served to integrate organisations, encourage them to carry out common activities, and provided a forum to discuss the experiences of youth organisations in other countries. Further project activities are scheduled for September 2003.
