The East European Democratic Centre (EEDC) grew out of the Institute for Democracy in Eastern Europe Foundation’s (IDEE) Belarusian Programme which began in 1994. The
EEDC was registered as a separate non-governmental organisation (NGO) in January 2001 and its current activities form a continuum to IDEE’s Belarusian programme. The organisation’s main aims are: promoting the idea of democracy, supporting civil initiatives and non-governmental programmes, education on human rights, contributing to the building of an open society, working to promote social and political transformation in post-communist countries.
To date the EEDC has mainly implemented programmes in Belarus. The organisation’s first Ukrainian project was implemented in 2001and currently more projects are underway in Ukraine while the
EEDC is continuing to explore possibilities to broaden its activities.
Aside from maintaining well-established and long-term partnerships with several Polish organisations, including the Stefan Batory Foundation, Foundation Education for Democracy, IDEE Foundation among others, the
EEDC has co-operated with various organisations in the realisation of its Belarusian
programmes. EEDC has in the past co-operated with NGOs from Lithuania, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Belarus.
The EEDC continues working in several directions that had been decided on within the IDEE framework These include educational and training projects for journalists, teachers, regional press publishers and members of NGOs'. In the foreseeable future we intend to develop similar programmes for analogous target groups in Ukraine and plan on launching new programmes in Russia in the upcoming year. In addition to these main focus areas the EEDC co-operates with independent social, research and cultural centres in Belarus in order to support publishing informational-analytical issues. It is also an editor of the bulletin "Belarus – The Third Sector." The EEDC activities are possible thanks to the generous support of our regular partners: The National Endowment for Democracy, Charles Stewart Mott Foundation,
FREEDOM HOUSE. In the future, we hope to begin co-operation with other donors from Europe and the U.S.A.
